The Hidden Cost of an Offline Car Park

Case Study: Wildlife Trust Parking Success: Hozah at The Wrekin

A car park that can’t take payments doesn’t just lose money. It loses goodwill, generates complaints and quietly drains the budgets it was meant to support. Here’s what one of Shropshire’s best-loved hills taught us about fixing it.

Why do remote car parks lose so much revenue?

Most people see a broken pay machine as a minor inconvenience. For the site owner, it’s a compounding problem.

A visitor arrives, the kiosk won’t connect, and they either leave without paying or pay incorrectly. A PCN follows, along with a complaint and a sour start to what should have been a good day out. Multiply that across a busy season and the real cost isn’t the fine print. It’s lost income, staff time spent handling disputes, and the erosion of public trust.

For a site with no permanent staff and no dependable signal, this is the default, not the exception.

What happens when the site is also funding a charity?

That was the situation at The Wrekin, one of Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s most visited sites. Parking income there goes straight back into habitat restoration and conservation, so every failed transaction cost more than the car park itself.

The Trust needed a system that could run on its own, in a location where nothing could be taken for granted.

What changed?

After a detailed tender process, the Trust partnered with Hozah to rebuild parking at the site. The outcome:

  • 34% more parking revenue (Jan–Apr 2025 vs. Jan–Apr 2024)
  • Zero kiosk downtime, apart from brief overnight updates
  • Fewer PCNs and fewer complaints
  • Less admin for a small team that would rather be looking after wildlife
The technology provided by Hozah has been a fantastic addition to our Wrekin site. As our site is based in a remote location, reliable connectivity can often be a challenge – but Hozah’s existing system and willingness to adapt to the challenges this presents, has proven robust and dependable even in these conditions. As a charity, it’s fantastic to generate additional income, knowing that every penny goes straight back into supporting our vital conservation work and protecting local wildlife.

The solution is simple for visitors to use and has made a real difference in how we manage our parking facilities. We’re now able to offer flexible payment options for everyone, both regular and visiting walkers, all while reducing administrative time and improving overall efficiency.

From the outset, the Hozah team has been exceptional; responsive, understanding of our unique needs, and always ready to help with any queries. Their in-ground kiosk has also been a real asset: sturdy, reliable, and ensuring smooth operation. We’re delighted with how the partnership has developed and grateful for Hozah’s continued support and innovative approach. Their technology has helped us provide a better experience for visitors while allowing us to focus more on our conservation work.

The bigger lesson for site owners

Reliability is the foundation of everything else in parking. Pricing, enforcement and customer experience all depend on the basics working, every time, wherever the site is. That’s true for a hilltop reserve, and just as true for a hospital, a campus or a retail park.

The interesting part isn’t that the technology worked. It’s how it was designed around the constraints of the site, rather than asking the site to adapt to the technology.
